Installing an attic fan can improve your attic's air circulation and help alleviate a range of issues, from high utility bills to health problems. With the right knowledge, you can follow these steps to install an attic fan safely and effectively. Step 1: Preparation

• Choose the ideal location for your attic fan; consider the flow of air and placing the fan near the peak of the garage or under a window. Remove any roof shingles in the area using a pry bar or utility knife.
• Install the gable vent (if applicable) and ensure it is securely fastened.
• Cover any exposed areas of the gable vent with wood or applicable material to prevent water damage. Secure the thermostat near the attic fan but avoid placing it in the air stream.
• Install a standard 120v outlet according to applicable codes and standards, and set the temperature setting for optimal savings (usually around 110°F).

Step 2: Installing the Attic Fan

• Measure from the ridge line (the top of the roof) to the top center of the ventilator hood; drill a hole centered between two rafters, and use a tack to secure a pencil or screwdriver from the outside.
• Mark the rafter center and cut a hole for the attic fan with a saw or reciprocating saw. Make sure to cut away enough of the sheathing for an easy fit.
• Locate the intersecting rafter on the roof deck and remove the screws.
• Install the attic fan's hoisting hooks, attaching them to the drop ceiling nails.
• Have someone lift the fan to the roof, guiding it into place.
• Lower the attic fan to the roof deck and hand tighten the bolts. Lower the hoisting hooks, ensuring they remain secure.
• Support the fan temporarily with substantative objects until securing with roof plywood screws.
